Sheep Island Ensemble in Jonesport, Maine!

July 27th, 2010

A small manifestation of the Sheep Island Ensemble, consisting of Nacole Palmer, Bénédicte Jourdois, and myself, performed for a most receptive and warm audience in Jonesport, Maine, way downeast.

It was a moving experience to perform this rich music for people who rarely experience classical music performed live, and we made lots of friends. Special thanks to James and Tay Cooper, who hosted us while we were up there.

Meet Me Online!

May 27th, 2010

I was featured on the most recent Trinity webcast, and wanted to share the link with you all. It’s a nice six-minute video that has footage of me singing, conducting, teaching, and composing, and is very well done by the great video staff at Trinity.

Enjoy!

The Choir of Trinity Church, Wall Street performs “Nunc Per Speculum in Aenigmate”

April 25th, 2010

The Trinity Choir performed Nunc Per Speculum in Aenigmate on their final concert of the season, entitled “New (York) Music,” on May 17th. It can be viewed somehow online, but the link went bad. Will research that.

It was a fantastic performance and the entire concert is worth watching, with works by Judd Greenstein, Avery Griffin, Caleb Burhans, Lisa Bielawa, Charles Wuorinen,  John Zorn, George Perle,  Johannes Somary and Calvin Hampton.

The piece was premiered in January, 2009, and has been fully revised for this concert. It features three soloists-soprano, alto, tenor, each declaiming challenging prophetic texts, centered around Matthew 27, which quotes Jesus as saying, “Do not think that I came on earth to bring peace. I came not to bring peace, but a sword.” The work is an exploration of that text and a reflection on the prophetic tradition through I Corinthians, and is dedicated to the Choir of Trinity Church Wall Street.

The Messiah, online

December 16th, 2009

Last Sunday and Monday I sang in Trinity Wall Street’s Messiah. Of the many Messiah’s I’ve sung, this was one of the most beautifully expressed, shaped, and felt. Robert Mealy inspired a string sound that was sumptuous, strong, and filled with pathos, my soloist colleagues gave powerful performances, and I was very moved to be led by Jane Glover, who I hold in the highest regard.

The performance is available on Trinity’s website, and I highly recommend it to you.

Nacole Palmer, soprano

Nacole and Benedicte in concert

Nacole Palmer, one of my great colleagues, presented two of the Moby Dick songs in recital with Bénédicte Jourdois at the Tenri Cultural Institute. These two songs-Delight and Amours in the Deep make a healthy mini-cycle, and are an amuse-bouche for the hour-long project which is underway and which will be premiered in the Fall of 2011.

Vassar Madrigal Singers to perform “Riveder”

November 19th, 2009

Drew Minter’s ensemble at Vassar, the Vassar College Madrigal Singers, will perform my challenging a cappella work A Riveder Le Stelle, with a text from Dante’s Inferno, this Sunday the 22nd of November at 3pm. The concert is thankfully broadcast live on the internet, so you can watch it from anywhere in the world! I’m very honored and excited to be working with Drew and his singers, and look forward to my first virtual performance.

Fox news features future collaborator

September 30th, 2009

Isabelle Demers, the incredible organist for whom I’m writing a piece that she’ll premiere summer of 2010, has recently been featured on Fox News. I almost didn’t want to watch it, but it’s nicely done, and has some great quotes from her. I’m most surprised that they would run a news story that’s so positive and doesn’t involve scandal, and there’s a revealing comment by the anchorwoman at the end, putting her job in perspective. (They just want to report good stories, too, and this time, Jason got the lucky straw.)
